Actuation
Between deciding and doing sits actuation: intent turned into torque, at a joint, in the physical world. This is the layer where a mistake stops being a bad answer and starts being a broken object or an injured person.
Actuation is the least glamorous subsystem and the one with the least tolerance for error. A policy that is right 99% of the time is a research result; an actuator that is right 99% of the time is a hazard. Most of the work here is not teaching new behaviour but verifying existing behaviour at volume — watching runs, flagging the motion that looks wrong before it becomes the incident that proves it was.
What this needs from people
- Trajectories reviewed for smoothness and for the jerk that signals a bad policy.
- Anomalies flagged by people who have watched enough normal runs to recognise an abnormal one.
- Safety envelopes judged case by case, because the rule is rarely a single threshold.
- Traceability: which reviewer passed this, against which written standard.
